AI search sends fewer visitors but they are ready to buy
When someone finds you through an AI tool like ChatGPT, they have already done most of their thinking. That changes what your website needs to do when they arrive.
If you have noticed a small trickle of visitors arriving from ChatGPT or similar AI tools, do not ignore it. According to recent industry research, traffic that comes via AI assistants converts at a significantly higher rate than paid search clicks. The volume is lower, but the people who do arrive are much closer to making a decision.
For a local service business, that is worth paying attention to.
Why these visitors are different
When someone searches on Google, they are often at the beginning of their thinking. They scan several results, compare options, and make up their mind over time.
When someone asks an AI tool a question like "which local plumber in Bristol covers emergency call-outs at weekends?", the AI does the comparing for them. By the time that person clicks a link, they are not browsing. They are checking you out before they pick up the phone.
They arrived with context. They want confirmation, not a sales pitch.
What this means for your website
Most small business websites are built to grab attention and push visitors towards a contact form as fast as possible. That works well enough for Google traffic. But an AI-referred visitor who lands on a stripped-down page with nothing but a big "Get a quote" button may feel short-changed and leave.
Think about what they are probably looking for:
- Clear evidence that you do exactly what the AI said you do
- Enough detail to feel confident you are the right fit
- An easy, low-pressure next step
That does not mean you need a complicated website. It means your key pages should explain your service properly, mention the area you cover, and give people a reason to trust you before they commit.
Reviews help here. So does a short paragraph about how you work, what to expect, and who you typically help. If the AI told someone you are a friendly, reliable local option, your website should feel like proof of that, not a contradiction of it.
A practical starting point
You do not need to overhaul everything. Start by looking at your most important service page and asking honestly: if someone already half-wanted to book me, would this page reassure them or confuse them?
Check that your location is clear, your services are described in plain language, and there is a simple way to get in touch without filling in a long form. A phone number at the top of the page still goes a long way.
It is also worth adding a question to your enquiry form or your first call with new clients: "How did you find us?" Include AI tools as an option. Over time that tells you whether this channel is growing for your business specifically.
AI-referred visitors are still a small part of most local businesses' traffic, but that share is likely to grow. Getting your website in good shape now costs far less than scrambling to catch up later.
If you would like a second opinion on whether your site is set up to handle this kind of visitor well, we are happy to take a look.
