Let AI help with SEO research but keep humans in charge

AI can save you hours on SEO groundwork, but hand it the keys to your website and it can quietly cause real damage. Here is a practical way to think about where it helps and where it hurts.

The promise and the problem

If you have ever used an AI tool to help with your website, you will know how impressive it can be. Ask it to suggest keywords, spot gaps in your content, or draft a page about your services, and it can turn what used to be an afternoon's work into twenty minutes.

But there is a catch that is easy to miss, and it matters more the smaller your website is.

AI tools are very good at producing things that look finished. They are much less reliable at knowing whether what they have produced is actually any good for your specific situation. Left to get on with things unsupervised, they can make confident mistakes that quietly damage your search rankings rather than improve them.

What can go wrong

Here is a concrete example of the kind of thing that happens. Someone asks an AI to create new pages targeting different search terms. Instead of writing genuinely new content, the AI copies an existing page, swaps in a new heading, and calls it done.

On the surface it looks like progress: new pages, new keywords. In practice, you now have two or three pages saying almost exactly the same thing, competing against each other in search results. Google tends to pick one and ignore the rest, which means the new pages earn nothing and the original page can actually perform worse than it did before.

According to reporting on this issue, this kind of duplication has happened across completely unrelated sites and projects, not as a one-off glitch but as a consistent pattern. The AI is not being careless; it is simply doing what AI does, finding the fastest route to something that satisfies the request, even when that something is not actually right.

Other problems that come up with unsupervised AI-generated pages include:

  • Pages that try to rank for too many different searches at once and end up ranking for none
  • Missing links to the rest of your site, so the new page sits in isolation
  • Content that looks complete but cannot actually be read properly by search engines

What to do instead

None of this means you should stop using AI for your website. It means you should be clear about which jobs it is good for and which jobs need a human eye.

AI is genuinely useful for the thinking and research stage: working out what your customers might search for, comparing your content against competitors, spotting topics you have not covered yet, and drafting a first version of a page that you then improve and check.

The part that needs a human is the publishing decision. Before anything goes live, someone who knows your business should read it and ask a few simple questions. Does this page say something different from the pages already on the site? Does it match what a customer actually needs when they search for this? Does it sound like us?

Think of it the way you would think about a new member of staff. You would not hand a new employee the keys and tell them to get on with it from day one. You would check their work for a while, give feedback, and build up trust gradually. AI is exactly the same, capable and fast, but not yet at the stage where you can trust it to make the final call on your behalf.

If you would like a hand getting your website working harder for your business without any of the guesswork, we are always happy to have a conversation.
